Beautiful Wreck: Sex, Lies and Suicide, is a very personal and inspirational read. It delves into the life of triple-suicide survivor and author Stephanie Schroeder. We are introduced to this story during her move to NYC and are given a glimpse into her mind through her often tumultuous relationships.Beautiful Wreck takes us through events that halt and often decrease any progress she has made in properly handling her mental illness. Stephanie begins by introducing us to her abusive relationship with someone who originally gave the impression that she wanted to “help” her. We then travel through the ups and downs in this relationship and the next as well as her time in school and with various jobs. Her story shows just how much your surroundings can affect your mental status. It shows the results of people around you telling you that something is wrong with you and in turn treating you negatively due to this “problem.” Stephanie’s openness to reach out for help and to then share her story is truly inspiring. Sometimes just hearing or reading that someone has gone through what you are going through, and has come out on the other side, is all you need to not only feel better but hopefully also do something to help yourself. In a time where mental illness and care is being more readily spoken about, now is the time to act. Whether you are dealing with a long-lasting and pressing mental issue, bullying or new feelings after long periods of under- or unemployment, no one should be afraid to go and get help.

The Museum of Modern Art presents the most comprehensive U.S. retrospective ever assembled on the Art Theatre Guild, the independent film company that radically transformed Japanese cinema by producing and distributing experimental, transgressive, and genre-shattering films from the early 1960s until the early 1980s. This retrospective of approximately 40 titles features such seminal Japanese directors as Hiroshi Teshigahara, Kaneto Shindo, Shohei Imamura, Nagisa Oshima, Toshio Matsumuro, and Koji Wakamatsu, and runs concurrently with Tokyo 1955–1970: A New Avant-Garde. Also presented are several programs of Japanese underground cinema of the period, including experimental films and videos by Donald Richie, Iimura Takahiko, and others. The exhibition is organized by Go Hirasawa (Meiji-Gakuin University), Roland Domenig (University of Vienna), and Joshua Siegel, Associate Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition is co-organized by The Museum of Modern Art and The Japan Foundation.
